Session 2

Civil Societies as a Force for Stability and Progress in an Increasingly Turbulent World

Saturday, 15 November 2025

14:10 - 15:25 (GMT+7)

Speakers & Moderator

Across the world, civic space is evolving amid growing social, political, and security challenges. In some countries, regulations and policies have placed new pressures on civil society, testing the ability of independent organizations to speak, advocate, and serve their communities freely. The 2025 Civic Space Report highlights how funding constraints, misinformation, and rising polarization are reshaping the environment in which civic actors operate.

At the same time, democratic norms are being tested by complex global dynamics—from shifting geopolitical rivalries to the rise of populism and digital disruption. These changes have created uncertainty, yet they also underline the enduring importance of civic participation, accountability, and public trust as foundations of resilient societies. In this changing landscape, civil society organizations and non-governmental actors continue to play an essential role. Through their work in mobilizing communities, promoting dialogue, and defending fundamental freedoms, they help sustain democratic values and social cohesion even in difficult circumstances.

This session will explore how civil society can remain independent, effective, and adaptive amid these evolving conditions. It will highlight practical ways to safeguard civic space, strengthen collaboration with governments and citizens, and reinforce trust as a cornerstone of democracy and peace in an increasingly complex world.
